While each of these bands sound quite different, they all fall into a loosely-defined music genre called "shoegaze". Wikipedia says shoegaze is "characterised by a self-deprecating, introspective, non-confrontational feel" - ummm, ok. But we just dig the music. So much that we feature three bands this week: Bandung-based KUBIK with "Sun Grows Cold", Seattle/Jakarta-based LAIN with "Veteran Traveler" and Surabaya-based FRIDAY with "Sitting on Anything Cold." Does it sound introspective? You be the judge and keep those comments coming. 14:05, 7.2MB

Great stuff here –
As gothic spawn from the 80s, I really dig Kubik’s rocked-up Sisters of Mercy sound, and the Porl Thompson(ey) melodic flange pedal’d rage guitar on Lain’s track. Friday transports me to lighter pre-grunge memories, though I don’t mean to say these bands are all stuck in the 80s. That could be my problem.
Any insight about the creepy sample that starts “Sun Grows Cold”?
Could you name some other bands in Indonesia that seem to be staring at their shoes?
A fitting podcast to release in late October.
Thanks!
Chad, there's one great shoegaze band from indonesia: Sugarstar. It's too bad that they already break up now but they will release a double album prolly next year, I hope it will be available on iTunes, their stuffs are amazing.
Hey Chad - check out The Milo (Bandung), Cherry Bombshell and Everybody Loves Irene. That should take care of your fix. As for the sample for "Sun Grows Cold" check with FX Adam directly on www.myspace.com/kubik...we're sure they will be happy to help.
for all indonesian shoegazer, keep gazing at your shoes
