ANSWERS

1. What is Equinox DMD?
Equinox DMD is a distributor of full track digital downloads to the iTunes Music Store.

2. Do you do ringtones?
Nope - only full track songs, and only on iTunes.

3. Why only iTunes?
iTunes has over 80% of the global market for legal digital downloads and has the most logical sales model. Unlike monthly-fee services like Sony Connect, Yahoo! Music Unlimited and Napster, iTunes sells the music and you will own it forever. We agree with Steve Jobs and the good folks at Apple that people like to buy music, not rent it. We might consider another service in the future but for now it's just iTunes.

4. Do I need a label to join?
We prefer working with labels as it is usually easier for everyone and we tend to speak the same language. However, we are happy to work with indie artists - and have a lot online already. Check out our artists page!

5. Is it exclusive?
Our agreements are only exclusive for the iTunes Music Store.

6. Who keeps the rights to our music?
We only deal with the rightsholder - so if you have them we deal with you. If your label has the rights, we deal with them. The rightsholder keeps the rights - they just license the digital distribution rights to us for iTunes.

7. How much does it cost to join?
Nothing. All we need to get started is 2 copies of your CD and your signature on our Digital Music Agreement. Once we have both of these, your music will be live in 21 countries in about four weeks.

8. How much do we get paid?
We don't want to put this information on the website...but let's just say you will receive a very fair percentage of sales. Contact us for further details.

9. When do we get paid?
We report monthly, and pay the month after.

10. How do you promote?
Besides making a page for you on our website (getting a lot of unique hits every day), we also have a very successful podcast program that we might ask you to participate in. We also have lots of other interesting and exciting promotional programs in the works and will let you know when they happen.

11. If we join Equinox DMD, does this prevent us from doing anything else with our music?
Nope. Like we said, we just distribute full track masters to iTunes and nothing else (for the time being...if this changes we will let you know.)

12. Can we stop at any time?
It takes quite a lot of time and effort to set up your webpage and do all the encoding and uploading and promotion for you and your music so we hope you will stay with us for a long time. However, if for some reason you want to quit you can...just give us 90 days to take your music down and remove all traces from our website.

13. Can we release an album as digital-only, not on CD?
You sure can...however we require a CD with uncompressed AIFF files for a clean encoding as well as cover art. But you don't have to do a big pressing just to join...just give us 2 clean copies with all track and recording info and you are good to go.

14. Can we release just a single into digital distribution?
Technically you can, but we don't want to at the moment as we are concentrating on full-length CDs.

15. Is it possible to make some new updates to our CD - add a few new songs, give it a new album cover, use our new name?
Nope - once you give us a CD and we encode and upload you can't make any changes. So be sure you get it right the first time. You can however, release another CD with remixed or remastered tracks. Check with us for more details on how this works.

16. Can we sign up some, but not every, song from our CD?
Sure. We would prefer to have all songs on the CD, but we understand that there might be issues with some of the songs so we can exclude them if necessary.

17. What about cover songs?
We get asked this all the time, and regretfully we don't want to distribute cover songs...we only want your original music. Cover songs get complicated with royalty payments and we don't think it is in anyone's interest to promote songs written and composed by one artist, and then performed by a completely different one. It happens all the time, we just aren't interested in distributing it.

18. What if I have more questions?
If we still haven't answered your questions - send us an email here and we will get back to you right away.
