It was a stormy night in Jakarta on February 17, 2006. Bolts of lightning were felling trees across Jakarta, causing traffic to back up on the
city's main roads. The formal launching of Equinox DMD had just concluded at Plaza Senayan and it was time to make it to the company's afterparty in Kemang, south
Jakarta. Despite high winds and blackened skies, hundreds turned out to see three of the country's top rock bands perform at Barbados. In fact, the haunting weather
set an eerily perfect backdrop for what was about to unfold.
DJ Bodrek was taking no prisoners as he warmed up the crowd with music as heavy as the rain was pouring.
When the time was right, just after 11 pm, the first band came on, slaking the thirst of a hungry crowd. In their first visit to Jakarta (and first time on a plane!)
the Postmen introduced Jakarta to their rap-metal sound. The band from Bali -- one wearing a wolf mask and all in black leather - got the crowd howling for more.
They were about to get it in a dose from Koil. Fans of the legendary industrial metal group had come from as far as Bandung, the band's hometown, to check out one of their rare appearances
in the capital. The lead guitarist Imo was down with dengue fever but an able Adam (from Kubik) took his place without missing a chord. The charismatic quartet played an amazing set and
threw in a track from their first, self-titled album along with a song from 12:00 AM soundtrack. The coup de grace came from Jakarta's own Seringai. After a warm-up session with their
best friend Jack Daniels, the group was ready to tear it up. Vocalist Arian13 taunted the crowd with his usual provocative praise of dangdut king Rhoma Irama and Ricky unleashed the
power chords that have become his trademark.
Darkness had descended on Jakarta, both inside and outside the club, and it was all recorded. Check out this special night and the first
time any of the bands have been recorded live - but not on cd. The first volume of the soon-to-be-regular Djarum Jam Session is available only on iTunes.
