Time spent overseas can have a lasting impact on every aspect of one’s life, especially music. Thus it would seem that years studying at university in Adelaide had a profound influence on two of the members of EVACUATE COWBOYS, a band who owes no small debt to the genius of Maynard James Keenan. Most of the members cite the leader of Tool and A Perfect Circle as a strong influence yet the band (which takes its name from a classic Benyamin Sueb film from the 1980s called Koboi Ngungsi) comes up with its own brand of avant-rock sung in Indonesian. The themes of love, sex, death and anger all simmer beneath the surface of the guitar-driven angst that dominates the first original effort of these five monsters of rock. The group, now based in Jakarta, hopes to release a 10-track cd for the Indonesian market some time in 2007 but fans of the genre can check out eight of this promising young band’s songs right now on iTunes
