Jkt:Skrg

The first offering by Aksara Records was as much a sign of the times as a sign of things to come. The compilation documents a period in 2004 when indie bands were finally getting regular gigs at places like BBs in central Jakarta and other small bars around the city. The shows were more often remembered for what was destroyed than what was performed but the trend would remain and later gather steam. Tracks by pioneering bands like the Upstairs, Seringai and Teenage Death Star are featured on this cd that helped kick off a movement and awareness that less conventional bands could also prove commercially viable. Few were willing to take the chance on bands without a name or image but this single-minded label recognized quality when it saw it. Many of the bands have since gone on to record with Aksara Records while others have gone on to major labels. Their success and survival are far from assured but their contribution to a new direction in music has now been documented and will serve as an inspiration for the legions of new bands to come.
